Kate Gibbs Ceramics

Kate makes functional pots designed for both use and display. Making pots that are both highly functional and visually attractive is one of the challenges she enjoys most about being a functional potter. All of my pottery is reduction fired to cone 10 and is therefore made to be durable and restaurant-quality.

Both the clays and minerals Kate uses for glazes are processed by hand. The depth and beauty of these materials surpasses any qualities she see in store-bought clay and glazes. "Although we lose a measure of predictability and consistency when using unpurified found materials, the results are often much more unique and visually attractive."

Kate and her business partner, Matt Fishman, work out of their studio in West Oakland called Lutum Workshop. Their small studio is located inside a larger compound called O2 Artisans Aggregate.
